The written word, unlike the spoken, is static and unchanging. Printed words retain their documented sameness, unlike the words of our memory, which are malleable. It is language’s poetic nuance and potential for abstraction and interpretation that gives it depth and substance. Writing has allowed us to pin down, revise and craft words, allowing expression, symbolism, abstraction and revisitation.
